
Pixel Modem Vulnerability Exploited, Google Patches It
Google says CVE-2026-58704, a Pixel cellular modem privilege escalation flaw, may be under limited targeted exploitation; September updates fix it.
Google has disclosed that a vulnerability in the Pixel cellular modem, tracked as CVE-2026-58704, has come under limited targeted exploitation. The flaw is a privilege escalation issue, and Google's advisory issued Tuesday states that the company has found indications the vulnerability may be actively used in attacks. According to the NIST National Vulnerability Database, a logic error in the modem code can allow a permission bypass, leading to remote (proximal/adjacent) privilege escalation with no additional execution privileges needed and no user interaction.
The cellular modem is the chip that connects a phone to the mobile network for calls and data, and it runs its own separate software. The vulnerability carries a CVSS score of 8.0, which is in the high severity range. In plain terms, privilege escalation means an attacker can gain more access rights than they should normally have, in this case within the phone's cellular modem. The remote (proximal/adjacent) description means an attacker likely needs to be within radio range or on a nearby network path, but the victim does not need to click a link or open a file. On September 16, 2026, the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) added CVE-2026-58704 to its Known Exploited Vulnerabilities (KEV) catalog, a list of security flaws that attackers are actively using. CISA described the issue as an improper authorization vulnerability in the cellular modem, saying a logic error may allow an attacker to bypass permission checks and escalate privileges. Federal Civilian Executive Branch agencies were told to apply the fixes by September 19, 2026. Because the exploit needs no click or file open, it is considered a zero-click attack.
The September 2026 Pixel update resolves CVE-2026-58704 and 109 other security flaws. Of those other fixes, 88 address privilege escalation, 10 address information disclosure, 9 address remote code execution, and 2 address denial-of-service. Two high-severity privilege escalation vulnerabilities in Kernel components (the core of the operating system) are tracked as CVE-2026-56914 and CVE-2026-58773. The update also patches 46 critical-severity vulnerabilities across Pixel components, including BigOcean, Bootloader (the software that starts the device), IP Multimedia Subsystem (the part that handles voice and video calls over mobile data), and Trusted Execution Environment (a secure area for sensitive operations). These critical issues could lead to privilege escalation or remote code execution. Google states that security patch level 2026-09-05 or later resolves all identified flaws. Users can install the update by going to Settings, then Security & privacy, and following the update prompt.
The actively exploited modem flaw is not an isolated case in recent Google updates. In June 2026, Google patched CVE-2025-48595, a high-severity flaw in Android's Framework component with a CVSS score of 8.4, and said that flaw had come under active exploitation. For website owners and IT teams, the connection to hosting and website security is direct. Many people use the same phone to manage WordPress dashboards, hosting control panels, company email and two-factor authentication codes. If an attacker gains elevated rights on the phone, that device can no longer be trusted to protect logins, messages or saved credentials, which in turn puts the websites and accounts accessed from it at risk. Google has not shared details about who is behind the limited targeted exploitation or exactly how the attacks are being carried out. The advisory stops short of describing the threat actor or the attack chain. Because the flaw can be triggered silently without any interaction from the device owner, the safest response is to install the September 2026 update as soon as it is available. After updating, users should confirm that the Android security patch level shows 2026-09-05 or a later date. No workaround is described in the advisory; the patch itself is the mitigation.
